Links That Shape My Thinking

My philosophy about marketing music is that it's all about fans and it's all about stories. While it goes without saying that you have to have good songs, that on its own, is not enough. I certainly don't have all the answers, but I know that working with artists who believe as I do, there's a million ideas worth trying. The music industry is one big mess right now and no one has all the answers - rather than seeing this as a problem, the artists I work with and I see it as one big opportunity. Here's a list of books, blogs and articles that I hope will help you see the opportunities too.

"Guerrilla Music Marketing Handbook: 201 Self-Promotion Ideas for Songwriters, Musicians & Bands" by Bob Barker
This is a great idea generating book that should be a "must read" for anyone involved in the music business.

Derek Silvers founded CD Baby and is one of the most creative thinkers on the changing music industry:

This is where a lot of my thinking and contacts first started: SXSW 2009 panel "Artist As Entreprenuer". This is a VERY short recap of an amazing discussion: http://panosbrew.sonicbids.com/“artist-as-entrepreneur”-sxsw-recap/

Through that panel discussion I met Ariel Hyatt of Cyber PR. Love this list of 100 tips for Indie Musicians. It was compiled as a response to a joke of a Billboard article of tips like "Get booked on Oprah." Here's a list for the rest of us: http://www.arielpublicity.com/pdfs/IndieMaxExposure.pdf or at http://www.musicthinktank.com/100
